A celebration of South African fashion, identity, memory and the places we call home.

Home is more than a physical place. It is memory, language, clothing, family, landscape, tradition and the everyday experiences that shape how we understand ourselves.

Home as We Know It, presented by The Jozi Collective, brought together a selection of South African designers whose work explores these ideas through different perspectives, practices and visual languages.

The presentation created a space to consider what it means to make fashion from a place that is deeply personal, while also contributing to a much larger cultural story. Each designer offered their own interpretation of home — not as one fixed idea, but as something constantly evolving.

From familiar cultural references to contemporary silhouettes, materials, craftsmanship and storytelling, the work reflected the richness of South African creative expression. It demonstrated how designers can draw from what surrounds them while transforming those references into something distinctly their own.

At the heart of the presentation was the idea that South African fashion is built from a shared cultural vocabulary. Our references often overlap: the places we grow up in, the things our families wear, the objects we encounter, the traditions we inherit and the visual language that exists around us.

Home as We Know It was therefore not about defining a single South African aesthetic. It was about making room for many interpretations of what South Africa looks and feels like.

The presentation also formed part of The Jozi Collective’s broader commitment to creating platforms where emerging and established creative voices can be seen, connected and engaged with. Beyond showcasing clothing, the project was an opportunity to create dialogue around the ideas, histories and identities that continue to influence South African fashion.

Because home is never one thing.

It changes as we move, grow, remember and reimagine.

And perhaps that is what makes South African fashion so compelling: we are constantly finding new ways to tell stories about where we come from, where we are now, and where we are going.
