The Jozi Collective Presents: “Showing the Collection”

An Intimate Cape Town Showcase Redefining South African Fashion & Sustainability

In October, The Jozi Collective orchestrated “Showing the Collection” — an intimate, powerful presentation that brought four of South Africa’s most boundary-pushing designers to Cape Town. This event was not a typical runway spectacle; it was a dedicated moment designed to celebrate the meticulous craftsmanship, profound cultural storytelling, and the realistic, lived sustainability inherent in our local fashion ecosystem.

The goal was simple: to let the work speak for itself. Each designer — Thabo Kopele, Note, Hint Studios, and MacGale — unveiled four exclusive looks. The showcase allowed attendees to fully appreciate the cut, the handwork, the material choices, and the rigorous design process, all within a space focused on deep connection rather than spectacle.

Why This Showcase Matters

South African designers consistently deliver globally relevant fashion while navigating resource constraints. “Showing the Collection” was built to shine a direct light on this reality. It deliberately moved the conversation away from the idealised, often high-cost version of sustainability shaped by Western standards, focusing instead on the practical, ingenious methods local creators employ every day:

Intentional Materiality: Designers demonstrated sustainability through radical material choices—reworking existing fabrics, sourcing exclusively locally, and implementing hyper-limited, small-run production.

Craftsmanship as Sustainability: The event championed slow production methods and the inherent value of time and skill. This focus roots fashion in culture and longevity rather than in the rapid, disposable cycle of mass output.

Resource-Aware Creativity: It celebrated collections built with limited budgets, machinery, and access, proving that world-class, uncompromising design can be delivered through ingenuity and efficiency, not excess.

🎨 The Four Visionaries: Stories of Structure, Jazz, and Evolution

The intimate setting allowed for a full appreciation of the unique stories woven into each collection, connecting global design aspirations with deep local roots.

Thabo Kopele

Thabo Kopele presented a collection that felt refined and intentional, playing with soft structure, plush textures, and bold pops of colour. Thabo’s work is deeply inspired by South African fashion and the ‘kasi fashionable stories’—modern design that celebrates individuality and beautiful attention to detail, from the sculpted silhouettes to the contrasting materials, all without needing to shout for attention. His showcase made a strong case that true sustainability is achieved through thoughtful, zero-excess design.

Note

@n.o.t.e_clothing showcased a truly special collection, merging exquisite craftsmanship with a calm, almost meditative ease. Their latest work played with refined denim tailoring, flowing robe silhouettes, and painterly prints that feel both familiar and futuristic. The collection draws inspiration from many things, notably the rhythm and emotion of jazz music, lending a sophisticated, long-term ease to their quiet luxury aesthetic.

Hint Studios

@hintstudios__ is one of the youngest brands to showcase in The Jozi Collective’s slot, and their second collection showed significant evolution. This season felt more refined and self-assured: the tailoring was cleaner, the proportions more intentional, and the overall mood more grounded. Soft blues, greys, and whites created a calm energy, while playful accessories added a touch of personality. Hint Studios approaches sustainability through agility, upcycling, and redesign, proving it is beautiful to watch a young brand finding its rhythm and evolving in real time.

MacGale

As part of the four-look collection titled The Collection, @macgale_ brought a collection that explores structure through simplicity, defined by clean lines, sharp tailoring, and subtle plays on proportion. MacGale highlights a strong balance between formality and flow, showing how refined menswear can maintain a beautiful softness. This commitment to hand-finished detail and textile expression exemplifies slow fashion in its purest, most human form.

The Jozi Collective is proud to have provided a platform where the ingenuity and soul of South African design could be fully realized and appreciated.
